PLACES

LA MARINA

Gianfranco Fini & Piero Giacosa – Two Italian gentlemen with roots as designers and visionaries, had a dream. They took their dream half way around the world to the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean – and a country called the Dominican Republic. Here they met with the owners of the fabulous Casa de Campo resort. The resort owners heard these men, their dream, and gave it wings. Today, located at Latitude 18 degrees 23.9 North and Longitude 68 degrees, 54.2 West, their amazing dream is reality. Where the Chavon River meets the Caribbean Sea at the water´s edge of a 7,000 acre resort, is a chic new community and paradise found for sailors as well as those who have a need for speed… boats. Inspired by the old seaside villages of the Mediterranean, but equipped with all the most modern services to guarantee a comfortable, relaxing stay, Casa de Campo Marina extends over more than 90,000 square meters. Its colorful residential architecture includes 105 units including villas and townhouse-type apartments, many with a private pier. In the Calle Barlovento, besides the residential apartments, there are numerous shops to satisfy any need, while the Piazza Portofino, with its beautiful restaurants, pizzerias, ice cream shops and cafés, is the center of the night life and the natural backdrop for shows, sports and cultural events. The Casa de Campo Marina is where resort guests shop, dine and gaze at some of the finest vessels cruising the high seas; lovers of the sea reside; and cruising yachtsmen moor for maintenance, or come and play at the Caribbean´s Most Complete Resort!

THE SCHOOL OF DESIGN

The Altos de Chavon School of Design is located in the international art and design community of Altos de Chavon in La Romana, Dominican Republic. The School’s multicultural approach to art and design education, encompasses two years of intensive professional training, encourages graduates to compete in international design circles, to broaden their education in the fine and applied arts, and to serve as the creative lifeblood for emerging industry. The vigorous art and design program leads to the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in one of three major concentrations: fashion design, communication design, and Fine Arts/illustration. Under a unique curriculum, graduates of Altos de Chavón School of Design may then opt for a BFA program at Parson The New School for Design.

THE GOLFT COURSES

What really sets Casa de Campo apart is the golf courses designed by Pete Dye, each offering the most exciting and impressive beauty of golf and challenges for all levels of play. The famous 6,770-yard field, Teeth of the Dog, with its seven holes bordering the sea has been ranked by Golf Magazine as one of its 50 best golf courses in the world, and No. 1 in the Caribbean. The newly opened 7,800-yard Dye Fore golf course, overlooking Altos de Chavón artist village, is rumored to rival the venerable Teeth of the Dog in beauty and challenge. Teeth of the Dog Rated number one  in the Caribbean and 43rd, all around the world, by Golf Magazine.

Altos de Chavon

Altos de Chavon, is an architectural wonder, a 16th century replica of a Mediterranean village perched high above the Chavón River. The village was designed by Dominican architect Jose Antonio Caro, and created by Italian master designer and cinematographer Roberto Coppa. Dominican artisans handcrafted the stone pathways, decorative ironwork, furniture and enchanting buildings, reviving almost forgotten crafts of metal work and stone carving. Under Coppa´s direction, each stone was hand cut, each wooden door frame was handcrafted and each wrought-iron detail hand-forged. Construction of the village began in 1976 and the village was inaugurated in 1982 with the concert of Frank Sinatra at the amphitheater. Altos de Chavon was built as a center of culture for the Dominican people. Dominican residents, tourists and working artists, flock to this magically inspirational locale.
